Liwei Wang is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his B.S. (2017, with honors) and Ph.D. degree (2022, with honors) in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prior to his current position, he served as a postdoctoral scholar (2022-2024) and a visiting scholar at Northwestern University’s IDEAL Lab (2019-2021). His research focuses on developing machine learning and optimization methods to establish computational design frameworks for functional materials, metamaterials, and programmable material systems. His work resides at the intersection of machine learning, optimization, computational mechanics, uncertainty quantification, and advanced manufacturing.

Prospective students:

The Computational and Physical Laboratory invites self-motivated and collaborative students to apply for PhD or Master program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Candidates with a strong background or interest in machine learning, (topology) optimization, solid mechanics and 3D/4D printing are particularly encouraged to apply. We value the passion, curiosity, and potential over past achievements.

If you would like to join us, please indicate your interest in working with Prof. Wang in your application submitted through the official portal.  Application instructions for our graduate program can be found HERE.

In addition to the formal application, you are encouraged to directly email Prof. Wang (liweiw@andrew.cmu.edu) with a personal statement, a complete curriculum vitae, and any other materials that help tell your story—who you are and who you aspire to be.

Due to the high volume of inquiries, we may not be able to respond to every email, but all submissions will be carefully reviewed.
